The TS Historical Society
We are located in the Historic Depot at the western entrance of Tower. The grounds consist of the depot, a steam locomotive engine, passenger car, mancar, caboose, and homesteaders’ cabin, all open to the public.
The depot itself houses a museum with hundreds of local artifacts and photos. It also serves as the information center for the Lake Vermilion Resort Association and the Lake Vermilion Chamber of Commerce.
The land, steam locomotive, coach and depot were donated by the Duluth, Mesabi & Iron Range Railroad Company for historical purposes, while the additional cars and cabin were acquired and restored through the hard work of local community members.

Tower-Soudan Historical Society is “FIRED UP” about Tower’s Historic Fire Hall
The historic fire hall at 504 Main Street in Tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the oldest community fire hall on the Iron Range. It is now owned by TSHS and is undergoing a multi-phase restoration process to make the building usable for various public functions, as well as displaying the 1891 horse-drawn Ahrens steam pumper "James Tippet" and other historical memorabilia.
Each of the three building restoration phases is expected to cost between $100,000 to $300,000, with a good portion of funding from various grant sources; phases will be completed as funds become available. Community support is a requirement of all grant-funding agencies.
TSHS has launched a Sustaining Contributor Support Campaign for community members to contribute to the preservation and restoration of the historic fire hall. Our goal is to raise $10,000 annually for the next five years. Please consider making a one-time donation or committing as a Sustaining Contributor for however many years you choose. TSHS is a 501(c)(3) organization, so your contribution is tax deductible. All funds will be dedicated to the historic fire hall restoration.
You may use the "donate" button at the bottom right of this page to make your donation with PayPal or credit/debit card.
